Once the active period is completed, your braces are removed. The next step is called retention. Retainers are utilized to hold your teeth in their new positions until your bone, gums, and muscles adapt to the new teeth positions. Retainers can either be removable or permanently cemented invisible wires = permanent fixed lingual wire retainers (PFLR).
The PFLR has been in existence for over 50 years and has been extensively researched and refined by Dr. Robert Cerny of Hunter Valley Orthodontics. Most patients treated by Hunter Valley Orthodontics will be offered the PFLR retainer as the results obtained are superior to removable retainers. Removable retainers are recommended in cases where PFLR is contra-indicated or needs to be augmented such as high caries rate, short clinical crowns, width problems, growth problems etc. You must look after your retainer as instructed, otherwise your teeth may move toward their original positions and the benefit of wearing your braces will be lost.
The orthodontist will determine how long you need to wear your retainer. Time varies with each patient. Some people may need retainers for an extended period of time in order to eliminate shifting of the teeth. In most cases, permanent retention may be necessary.
The retention period is an important part of your overall treatment and should not be neglected!
Remember, if the retainer is removable, wear them in your mouth, not in your pocket. Retainers work when you follow our instructions.
Clean your retainers! After meals, clean all parts of the retainer with a brush and use floss regularly if you have been fitted with a PFLR.
Handle your retainers with care. Removable retainers are easy to lose and will break. If you take your retainers out, always place them in your retainer case for safety. Click here for more information on caring for your retainers.
