Practice Profile

Our practice has provided quality orthodontic care to the people of the Hunter Region for over 25 years.

The practice commenced in 1978 as a solo practice operated by Dr. Robert Cerny, originally from Tasmania, in Union Street, Newcastle. During 1983, Dr. Robert Chapman, a Novocastrian, joined him in that practice.

Over the years, the practice continued to grow steadily and both orthodontists established several branch-practices. These included Richmond, Forster, Tuncurry, Wingham and Singleton. In the late 80’s, it was determined that there was a growing need for orthodontic services in the Upper Hunter region and in 1987, our Maitland surgery was built and opened. The year 1989 was memorable, for in that year we relocated the surgery just prior to the earthquake, from the Union Street building to more modern and larger premises at 115 Darby Street, Newcastle. Our third surgery was also opened a short time later, this time at Warners Bay to service the Lake Macquarie region. The surgery, somewhat smaller in size to the Newcastle surgery, was located on The Esplanade and boasted picturesque views of Lake Macquarie.

During those years, the practice became known as C & C Orthodontics (an adaptation of Cerny & Chapman).

Over the years, many orthodontists have been employed in our practice including Dr. Garry Clare, Dr. Phil Green, Dr. Peter Vaughan as well as Dr. David Harrison and Dr. Hong-An Nguyen who later purchased the Maitland and Singleton practices from us and continue to be the orthodontists there today.

In 2000, we were fortunate to have another Novocastrian, Dr. Steven Cave join the practice.

Recently, the practice has undergone some major expansion and changes. Our main surgery relocated in November 2003 to new premises at First Floor, 464 The Esplanade, Warners Bay (above the Newcastle Permanent Building Society). This surgery is large and incorporates the most up-to-date technology available. It boasts the same Lake views as previously but can now be enjoyed by all from the panoramic windows of the clinic area.

Our Newcastle surgery also relocated in December 2003 into more modern premises overlooking the working harbour at First Floor, 139 Scott Street, Newcastle (opposite the Newcastle Rail Station). From the dental chair, patients enjoy the splendor of the Newcastle Foreshore, Stockton and distant beaches.

In March 2004, we opened a further surgery at Shop 5, 5 Town Centre Circuit, Salamander Bay under the guidance of Dr. Steven Cave who resides in that area. This again is an extremely modern surgery and will service the needs of the rapidly growing Port Stephens region.

As the practice continued to grow, we envisaged there would be a need to increase the number of orthodontists in our practice. In view of this and as a way to incorporate our new locations, we felt that C & C Orthodontics as a practice name was no longer applicable. Therefore in early 2004, we chose to recognise the regional nature of our business with a change in name to Hunter Valley Orthodontics.

Throughout the years and changes, the philosophy of our practice has always remained the same:- “to provide an excellent level of orthodontic care to all of our patients in a courteous and efficient manner”.

We will continue to ensure that this is achieved for all our patients.
